I grew up on a farm outside of wheeling in a little town called
Sherrard. When I was there, I was pretty rebellious and couldn’t
wait to get out and come to college. It took about a day and half to
get home sick, and now that I am older I am sorry I didn’t
appreciate how cool my child hood was. Raising kids in the woods is
the only way to go, and I’m glad I’m able to raise mine similar to
the way I was raised.
I believe that part of my artistic talent stems
from not having much as a kid. We didn’t have extra money for art
supplies and paper. It became a challenge to make art on whatever I
could find. Now that I can afford art supplies, I hoard them like a
little squirrel with nuts for the winter.
In high school, I would rush through my test,
because if I got done early enough, I could turn them over and there
on the back was a clean untouched piece of paper just begging to be
drawn on!! Okay, I go into a lot of trouble for doing that if the
grade wasn’t good enough; but I got lots of hours in learning to
draw! Too.
All I ever wanted was to be an artist.
Sometimes I entertained the idea of something else like a truck
driver when "BJ and the Bear” was a popular TV show, but it was
always “truck drive and artist” or “police and artist”.
When I came to Morgantown,
and enrolled at the University of WVU, I really streamlined my life and decided to just
pursue art. It’s worked out well for me, because I get to make art
everyday. Now the fire that I have for making art still stems from
a need: A need for more time!! I steal away a couple minutes at a
time & I love every second that I find for doing it. But, hours
aren’t usually set aside for it. Most of my work is finished after
lots of little sessions, and not a couple long sessions.
